As women, it’s good to be reminded of influential voices that challenge societal norms, break barriers, and redefine what it means to be a ‘one of us’.
Female empowerment poems speak not only to the strength of women but also to the unyielding power of their voices, their presence, and their ability to influence the world around them.
Female Empowerment Poems
One of the most iconic voices of female empowerment to me, is that of Maya Angelou, whose words resonate deeply within the hearts of women everywhere.
Her poem “Phenomenal Woman” is a beautiful expression of feminine power that transcends generations and societal expectations.
Maya Angelou: A Voice of Empowerment
In Phenomenal Woman, Angelou challenges the societal norms that try to define a woman’s value based on superficial standards like a fashion model’s size or physical appearance.
Instead, she celebrates the strength that comes from within; through her words, Angelou reveals the essence of being a strong woman, one who does not conform to expectations but instead embraces the very qualities that make her unique.

This poem I wrote, called ‘The Patriarchy’, celebrates the inner fire that resides in every woman; it’s an unstoppable force that society’s standards can never diminish, no matter how hard it seemingly tries to!
Much like Maya Angelou’s voice, it highlights how a woman’s strength comes from within, igniting those around her, rallying us into action.
Sylvia Plath (and the Power of Struggle)
Another woman whose work explores the female experience is Sylvia Plath. Although her work is often marked by darkness, there is a raw honesty in her poetry that speaks to the complexities of being a woman. There’s certainly no ‘fake positivity with Sylvia, which is so refreshing these days!

Rupi Kaur and the Modern Revolution
In today’s world, Rupi Kaur has emerged as one of the most celebrated female poets. Her work highlights the importance of emotional and mental strength in the ongoing process of empowerment.
Kaur’s poems often explore themes of feminine power, urging women to discover their own voice and embrace their authentic selves.
The simplicity of her words belies their power, drawing on the strength of women through history—from the hope of the slave to the strength of contemporary women.
Through her poetry, Kaur connects deeply with the struggles women face in society, especially with the rise of social media and the impact it has on women’s perceptions of their worth.
In a world where “pretty women” are constantly being portrayed as the ideal, Kaur challenges those notions, reminding us that the power of a woman lies far beyond her external appearance.
The Pep Talk: Embracing Feminine Power
We can look to our sisters and to the words of female authors who have blazed a trail before us.
The hive of honey bees that represents women’s solidarity is a metaphor for the community that we build when we support each other.
Women are a force, not to be underestimated or overlooked. The click of her heels signifies the sound of a woman walking confidently into any room, and the stride of her step is a declaration of her presence and independence.

Celebrating Women’s Strength Through Poetry
I am particularly passionate about writing on the topic of female empowerment. Not so much in a woo-woo sense, but simply in a sense that I woman should never feel shy to express who she is.
Behind the scenes of this blog, I’m a busy mom to two highly adorable, God gifted boys aged 6 and 4, and my day to day sees me drop them off for school in the morning, then head to work (head of marketing/copywriter) and then I collect them once school is done.
Still, there are times I find where the mom talks happening, which I enjoy, and we share a lot, sometimes more than others, but just this week I was in on a conversation where someone didn’t feel comfortable expressing themselves in public, for fear of being judged or ridiculed.
I mentioned to her that I run a whimsical, somewhat mystical blog where I share my poetry, and that I am a poet, and could she believe that I’ve received a few nasty comments in the past and she was really surprised!
But the reality is, people will mock you and make you feel small and inferior simply to appease their own selfish ego’s, and I have no desire to play a part in that, so I ignore the comments and reinvest my efforts into the one thing that annoy’s them, haha!
Not sure why I’m sharing this, but it links (to me anyhow) to the topic of female empowerment poems. I hope you enjoy my poetry, and don’t stop with this post, be sure to read these too!
