Poems About My Children
Welcome friend! Please, don’t be shy. Come on in, grab a cozy seat, and let’s discover one of the most soul-stirring topics that ever existed: that being, ‘poems about my children’, which is a synonym for our children collectively.
If you’re like me, you’ve probably been swept up countless times in waves of emotion, marvelling at their tiny hands, that endless energy, and the astonishing journey we witness every day of GROWTH. Literally, kids grow quicker than anything!
But writing about these moments? Well, it’s like trying to capture starlight in a jar—beautiful, challenging, and endlessly rewarding.
So today, I’m sharing with you the beauty and weight of crafting poems inspired by my kids—those little beings who change everything. I hope these poems resonate with you, too.
Last Goodbye’s and First Hello’s
It’s funny, no? Parenthood seems to be a constant series of firsts and lasts, which we never quite grasp before the next one begins. The first time we hold them, the first deep breath we take as we watch them sleep, hoping to guide them on the right path (while anxiously checking they’re breathing.)
As parents, our words become a part of their house of tomorrow, a safe space where our children will someday look back and feel how deeply we loved them. Oh, and the last goodbyes sneak up—the first day they walk without holding our hand or the final wave as they head off to those high school years. These moments might seem small, but to us, they are poetry, brimming with a love so raw it hurts. Literally.
These tiny yet monumental milestones make me want to reach for my pen almost daily. And sometimes, in the quiet hours of a cold winter day or a bustling special day, words express that infinite, unconditional love—like casting a love letter into the future for my kids to find when they need it most.
Finding Poetry in the Everyday
Poems about our young children aren’t always about big events. Sometimes, they’re about that first moment in the morning when the world feels new, and they’re the first thing you see through sleepy eyes. An autumn wind carries the laughter of great times spent together, and poetry writes itself in all these precious, ordinary instants.
And that’s exactly where the magic happens. Our words become a mirror, showing our kids the love we see when we look at them. These little daughters of life, these sons of ours, our heartbeats—each poem, each line, is like an open door for them to walk through in their own time.
Navigating the ‘Hardest Job’ with Unconditional Love
Parenthood is the most demanding job, no doubt about it (not that it’s a job, mind you.) I mean, some nights, I find myself grappling with what I want to say in a poem, hoping it will someday help them through their struggles.
There’s power in capturing the harder parts, too—the uncertainty, the most challenging part of seeing them hurt and knowing you can’t always ‘fix’ it. But our words remind them that they’re not alone, and that we’ve walked similar paths and found our way through.
That’s the beauty of writing poems about your own kids—they’re a reminder to yourself, too.
A reminder that no matter how challenging it can be, every moment spent guiding them is shaping them into remarkable humans who will someday walk their “own way” into the world.
And let’s be honest, while we try to lead them on the right path, sometimes, they’re the ones guiding us with their boundless curiosity and fresh perspectives!
Years of School, Growing Up, and Infinite Love
As they grow, life picks up pace.
Before you know it, school years have whizzed by, and they’re stepping out with dreams of their own.
And yet, there’s comfort in writing these moments down. It’s as if each word captures a piece of their childhood that we can keep, even as they drift toward new adventures.
Some days, the distance can feel like infinite leagues between us and the little ones who once clung to us. But as poets (and parents!) we know our love, captured in words, can bridge any and every gap.
A Poetic Farewell to Yesterday (and a Warm Welcome to Tomorrow)
As parents, we write from our own experiences – sometimes even from memories of our parents. Each line we craft is steeped in wisdom, hope, and the profound realization that we’re helping shape a whole new way of life for our kids.
So, as you write, or should I say if you write, let each word be a little seed planted in a flourishing hidden tree.
For the moments they’ll need to hear your words the most—those moments of doubt or hardship—your poems will be an unwavering testament to your motherly love.
And one day, perhaps when they’re holding their own children, they’ll find comfort in knowing that we, too, felt the same love, the same pride, and the same boundless hope.
Maybe, just maybe, they’ll pick up a pen of their own, adding verses to the songs of unconditional love that’s been sung through generations.
