I’d like to ask you lovely reader, which camp you’re in?
Are you in the “Motherhood is such a gift!” camp or the “Motherhood is freaking hard!” camp? Or somewhere in between those places right now? That’s (probably) more likely.
I only ask the question as there’s a mixture of poetry for moms poems here; some are literally an outpouring of devotion and adoration, while others – well – they’re for days where everything turns to shit – cos we all have those.
Poetry for moms
Now let me be clear here. I’m not from the bands of famous poets, nor a classical poet, or a professional by any stretch.
But I love writing poetry. I love it so much; I write it daily, and the more I write, the, erm, more I write…
I invite you to read on to take time for yourself to connect with the words I’ve written here for you.
Experience of Motherhood
Let’s start with the never-ending array of emotions that being a mom brings.
If you ask me, moms deserve a Nobel prize!
A good mother is ‘branded’ to us as this calm, zen-like, eternally tranquil, non-shouty woman whose kids behave like angels 100% of the time.
Me? OK. So, if you were to meet me in town with my kids, you’d assume I’m that. I am one of those annoying women who can (somewhat quietly) keep her cool in the supermarket while her kids run wild.
I admit, I rarely raise my voice super loudly, but the reality is, inside, I’m boiling over when my kids ignore me or hit me. We all are!!
But a mother’s unconditional love is everything to a child.
And there’s still a little girl in me somewhere craving such love, which I felt I’ve always needed more. So, I try to give my kids what I think they need in terms of love and emotional regulation by, I guess, knowing what I needed back then. Does that make sense?
I might be doing this whole mom thing wrong, mind you! I’m honest about that. If you feel you do a lot wrong like me, I encourage you to read this post on Encouragement For Moms.
Emotional Connection
Poetry uniquely taps into our emotions and connects us with ourselves.
For moms who often experience a wide range of emotions, like a roller coaster, poetry can be a powerful tool for processing feelings and finding solace in the experiences of others.
Whether we feel overwhelmed, joyful, or somewhere in between, there is a poem out there that can help us make sense of our feelings.
I just wanted to remind you as well that feelings are not permanent. They come and go, so whatever you’re going through now won’t last forever. Have courage. You are a strong woman! And it’s absolutely OK not to know.
Celebrating Motherhood
Motherhood is a complex, multifaceted experience, and poetry is a powerful way to celebrate its ups and downs.
From the joyous moments of watching our kids grow to the challenges of balancing work and family, there is no shortage of material for poets to draw upon.
Special bond
It is a bond like no other, the bond between a mother and child.
And my goodness, it’s a special day when the bond first occurs. Now, for some women, this happens instantly at birth.
For others, it takes time. Whatever it was for you, remove any form of judgment you have for yourself. Let it be. Read some poems of encouragement if this is you right now.
Early motherhood is awash with hormones and bodily changes, which can dramatically affect how we perceive ourselves.
Yet warm hearts and gentle eyes in the mirror will take you a long way. After all, it’s a lifelong friendship you have with yourself, you know? So work on that relationship, mama. With yourself, I mean.
The power of words
A good, short poem really packs a punch to get a message home.
It’s not always an open-arms, lovey-dovey thing with my poetry, either – let me warn you! Some of my best poems are actually not that kind. They’re more of an ass-kick haha…
Such as this one:
Childhood days
I wonder if you miss the baby days, like I do? I’m honestly so keen on having more kids, but I’m equally realistic that it might not happen.
It’s not like an everyday desperation for me, but the quiet hope is there. The longing doesn’t stop. Biology doing her thing, I guess.
It’s such a wonderful love, the love you feel for your own newborn. And the love honestly deepens as they grow.
I love our kids beyond eternity with an open heart and unfailing love, no matter how much they push me to the limit!!!
Some believe God created mothers, and some don’t. Whatever we root ourselves in, I firmly believe a beautiful life can be had regardless of faith, social conditioning, or any other influence.
