There are moments when words don’t seem enough to express what we feel inside. That tends to be the case with me, anyway. But is that true? Or just fears and doubts coming through? After all, words are everything.
And that’s why poetry is so powerful. I’m not talking about only romantic love here – I’m talking all types of love.
The Greeks in fact had it correct.
They described not just one type of love, like we do in the English language, but several, including agape (unconditional love) philia (friendship love) and of course, eros (romance)
What is real is, regardless the ‘type’ of love you feel, a poem can explain so much more than mere prose.
Whether the flutter of first love or the comforting stability of forever love, a poem is the best way to communicate how much someone means to you.
In this blog, I’ve shared a few of my very own love poems, showing how they express certain loves, albeit a touch unusual perhaps – welcome to my brain haha!
These are my takes on it, so you may not enjoy them. Whatever you feel, I welcome the comments and chats, so feel free to connect with me!

Poems About How I Feel About You
Poems about ‘how I feel about you’ are more than mere words – they are heartfelt reflections of our inner worlds, unseen to the human eye.
A love poem can be a powerful expression of feelings for someone, whether a family member, a best friend, or a new lover.
There’s a reason why love stories (and love letters) have stood the test of time: they create a beautiful thing that transcends the ordinary.
A great poem communicates affection and captures a moment in time, a special place in the heart where real friendships and deep bonds reside.
When you write a poem for someone, it’s a gift that stays with them forever, much like the wild geese that travel far and wide but always return home.
The best way to show someone you care is to craft something from the heart, a beautiful poem that reflects your unique connection.

Love Poems That Touch the Heart
First Love Poems
There’s something magical about first love. The feeling is pure, innocent, and full of potential. The rush of emotions, the excitement of wild nights, the tenderness of discovering someone new is unforgettable. A first love poem captures this fleeting yet eternal feeling. Think of the butterflies that come with the first time you held hands, the sweet laughter, and the memories of silly jokes shared between you two. A poem about first love can serve as a beautiful reminder of that special person who once made your heart skip a beat – or the one who broke it in the end!
True Love Poems
While first love may be exciting, true love is deep, trusting, enduring. A true love poem speaks to a love that transcends time and space. It’s not just about passion; it’s about the kind of love that grows stronger with each passing day, even after a long time together. It’s the genuine friendships you build with your best friend, the person who is always there to lift you up during bad things and celebrate with you during the good things. True love is about deep connection and understanding – an unspoken bond that lasts through every wild night and every special place you’ve shared.
Love Letters
A love letter is another way to express much love—a timeless gesture that allows you to articulate feelings that might be hard to put into words otherwise. Whether handwritten or typed, a love letter can be as personal and intimate as you want it to be. You might even want to borrow a few love quotes or love songs that remind you of your partner. A good work of a love letter is like a great poem—it captures the essence of your feelings, creating something unforgettable.

The Influence of Poets
Many famous poets have written great love poems that continue to inspire us today. From Pablo Neruda to Walt Whitman, each poet brings a unique perspective.
- Pablo Neruda is perhaps one of the most famous poets who wrote about love. His poems are filled with longing and passion. Neruda’s love poems deeply connect with the heart, making you feel his words are meant just for you. The way he writes about the depth of love makes his work timeless and universal.
- Walt Whitman is another poet who celebrates love in all its forms. His poems reflect an expansive view of love, both new love and true love, and his friendship poems emphasize the beauty of real connections.
- Paul Laurence Dunbar and Ella Wheeler Wilcox were also celebrated poets whose works delve into love, friendship, and loss. Their poems are great examples of love poems that speak to the soul.
How To Create Your Own Love Poem
If you’re ready to make a beautiful poem for someone you care about, here are a few tips from me to get started:
- Use Your Feelings: The first step in writing a great poem is to really think about how you feel. What emotions does this person stir in you? How do they make your life a better place? Whether writing to a family member, a good friend, or a special person, expressing your deep connection is key.
- Be Specific: Rather than writing generic lines, think about specific moments you’ve shared and write the details in. These details make your poem special and unique.
- Use Metaphors and Imagery: Love is usually abstract, but poets use metaphors to make these emotions feel tangible. Whether comparing your best friend to the deep trees of the forest or describing your love as the only life you’ll ever need, metaphors make your poem more vivid and engaging.
- End with Something Meaningful: A wonderful poem doesn’t have to be long. Sometimes a sweet poem with a powerful closing line is all you need to express your feelings. You could close by reminding your loved one how much they mean to you: “You are the reason I laugh at the funny things in life.”

Avoiding Common Mistakes
While writing a poem can be a beautiful expression of your feelings, there are a few common mistakes to watch out for. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Don’t Overthink It: A love poem doesn’t have to be perfect. The goal is to capture your emotions, not to create the best poem in the world. Just be authentic.
- Don’t Use Clichés: While love quotes can be a nice touch, try to avoid overused phrases like “You complete me” or “I love you to the moon and back.” Instead, focus on the real friendships and deep connections that make your relationship unique.
- Be Honest: There’s nothing better than authenticity to bring out the feels!
A Memo
Expressing how you feel about someone special is one of life’s most beautiful, magical things. From the passionate words of Pablo Neruda to the heartfelt sentiments in a sweet poem shared between true friends, poetry offers us a way to communicate our deepest emotions.
So the next time you feel compelled to share your heart, either with someone or out in the open like my poems here, consider putting pen to paper and creating something that will stand the test of time.
After all, love is the only life worth living!
