Poems About God
The words we read can act like a refuge in our busy lives if we let them, perhaps when we seek solace, understanding, or simply a connection to something greater than ourselves?
I’m not talking about the bible here just to clarify, though, in parts, it is full of beautiful writings (just as an FYI).
On their own, outside of religion, poems about God have long served as a connecting point to the divine, capturing the essence of faith, love, curiosity, and the mysteries of the universe.
I regularly write poems that I suppose are linked to God simply because I’m endlessly curious!
I’m a type 7 on the Enneagram, an ‘enthusiast’ which means I have an insatiable appetite for life and all it offers, yet equally, I never stop being energetic and hyper (lol). I’d love to have answers basically to life’s mysteries, why are we here etc (wouldn’t we all?)
I mean, sometimes, when I look up at the moon at night, I can’t help but feel the pull of God – like he/she/it is there, meeting me right where I’m at.
But more often than not, I’m met with silence, yet I have all I need in that silence, and peace washes over me. Has anyone else experienced this?
Having had several peaceful moments of late (and having written poetry straight after), I thought you’d like to read some of my poems about God.
For the times when, you know, you have a quiet moment to yourself maybe.
The Power of Poetry
Poetry has a unique way of encapsulating emotions and beliefs.
Unlike prose, it uses imagery, rhythm, and a single word or phrase to convey profound, bowl-you-over truths. For centuries, poets have turned to God as their muse, creating inspiring and uplifting works.
Even when the topic is neutral or even negative, poetry has a way of expressing things that standard prose simply cannot:
Poems About God’s Love
The love of God is a recurring theme in poetry. It’s a love that surpasses understanding, a divine compassion that embraces our brokenness and lifts us into grace.
God’s love is often likened to that of a parent for their child in some texts—boundless, selfless, and unconditional. I often question the love of God, as I wonder if it’s all in my head (as I’m sure many people do!) But I wrote this poems when I was fully in the “God’s love” phase a year or so ago…
Jesus Christ: The Christian Light of the World
There’s rarely a discussion about God in the Christian context that is complete without focusing on Jesus, the pillar of the Christian faith.
His sacrifice on the cross, as the ‘Son of Man’, is the ultimate expression of God’s love for humanity, again, regardless if you believe in it or not.
Many poets have found inspiration in His life, death, and (reported) resurrection, penning verses that echo the words of the Gospel.
I have to say, as an archetype, Jesus is pretty awesome. I pray to him, regardless if he’s listening or not.
I don’t know, but I get comfort from it anyway. I also pray to the universe, God, nature, and whatever is in my mind at that time.
I pray things such as this. It gets pretty deep at times.
Poems to Inspire
There is no shortage of resources for those seeking a deeper connection with God through poetry. And one thing I find quite fascinating, is that poems about God don’t need to be all happy and positive. Sometimes, the incessant ‘need’ to ‘be our best and forget the rest’ actually suffocates the deeper feelings we need to express.
Such as this poem here:
Finding Your Voice
Writing poems about God can be deeply personal, regardless of the reason for doing it. Perhaps you just need to vent? To share? To grieve? To hurt? To talk?
Whether inspired by Scripture, nature, energy, or personal experience, your words become an offering to the ether (aka holy spirit, chi, prana, etc, again, open access to all here.)
I encourage you to reflect on moments when you’ve perhaps felt God’s presence—in a friend’s laughter, the beauty of a sunrise, or the peace that comes from prayer. Perhaps you’d like to try writing a poem yourself? It’s very therapeutic I find.
This is one I wrote earlier this year. If you’re a mom, perhaps you’ll feel it too?
What I believe in
This is an interesting question to debate over I feel. The ‘what you believe in’ topic. I personally believe there is a God, but I factually know that religion is man made.
For me, God is infinite intelligence that is surely here, there, and everywhere, and we can choose to tap into that any time we wish – to raise our state or level on consciousness.
So, in that sense, I guess I believe in the energies of the universe, which makes me a touch new age’y and Eastern mixed with West (and Christian in some ways). I’m a blend I guess.
Summary
All I’d like to end with is this: let poetry be a source of inspiration.
It doesn’t have to ‘mean’ anything or lead to anything at all. I am not sure about my faith in truth, which tends to fracture and sway with the wind, but I do talk to God and find prayer very powerful; equally, I love writing poems, and so I’ll continue to do this for as long as I can.
I hope you enjoy these few poems I’ve shared here. There are so many more poems I think you’d like also, which I’ve linked below.
