Stress Less? Mothers Day 2022
There’s so much going on right now in the world (and in our lives) that we’re feeling the strain.
Stress is at an all time high, we’re overwhelmed by the news, and the reality is that Mothers Day can be a miserable event if stress gets the better of us.
Our stress sadly takes us into fight, flight or freeze mode, which is our survival response. When this happens, we’re on high alert, constantly waiting for the next stressor to hit us, unable to relax.
Now think about this for a moment.
Do you think that Mothers Day was created to stress mums out? NO!
Of course it wasn’t. It’s a day to celebrate Mothers around the world (albeit on different dates. )
Breathe
So breathe now. Right now! Take a deep breath in and… out. Everything will be OK.
Taking a breath is the number one tool you can use to activate your ‘rest and relax’ system and take you out of survival mode.
On the big day, take lots of deep breaths and remind yourself that this day is not designed to be stressful.
And, for the perfectionists out there – remind yourself that it doesn’t need to be perfect!
Take a deep breath and focus on connecting with your family. Step away from the dishes. Make Mothers Day 2022 a day for you and your closest ones.

There is nothing wrong in having a quiet day if that’s what you would like.
Equally, if you want to do something more elaborate, do so. But take lots of deep, calming breaths and stay grounded.
Don’t let yourself get into survival mode.
If you do, leave the room and take some more deep breaths until you return to a calmer state.
Connect
Take the time to connect with your family on Mothers Day 2022 by putting your phone out of sight.
Unplug from technology and take the day off. Be with your family while you’re eating together. Connect with them through a hug, or a smile.
Connection is something we all crave, but not enough of us actually do it.
We’re so used to being stimulated by our smart phones that we don’t realise how long we’re scrolling for until someone tries to talk to us.
I personally feel it’s more important than ever right now to put our phones down, for what are our kids learning about us constantly staring at a screen?
So on this special day, your day, take the whole day off from technology.
I guarantee your stress levels will come down.
Do something that makes you feel good!
What would you like to do on Mothers day 2022?
Your family aren’t mind readers, so tell them!
Would you like to go for dinner? Be treated to food at home? Go for a walk? Watch a movie?
Whatever would make the day seem that bit special compared to the norm is guaranteed to make it a memorable Mother’s Day.
Don’t be shy to take the day off. If you want to spend the day doing nothing, that’s fine!
If you want to spend the day cleaning the house, that’s also fine! Just communicate it to those you love, and they’ll support you as best they can.
Give Back
We all need to give something. Giving is the way to let go of stress.
Giving allows us to express our love, and to give back to the people we care about.
But when we’re stressed and not thinking logically, we don’t give enough. We tend to focus our thoughts inwards, and those we love suffer.
If you’re feeling stressed on Mothers Day 2022, think about what you can do for that special someone?
Your children? Your husband? How can you make it a special day for them too?
This, in turn, will make it the best Mothers Day 2022 you could imagine.
It’s a wonderful thing to be a Mother, and it’s a wonderful thing to be a Father. But it’s even more wonderful to be a parent.
Mothers Day is about celebrating all that we are, and being the best that we can be.
So think about what you can do for yourself, your family, your friends, and most importantly, your children.
Release The Pressure
Set yourself little reminders that Mothers Day doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, no day does! Nor do you need to be perfect! (Perfection doesn’t exist!)
Give yourself permission to feel zero pressure from yourself, most importantly. I say this because I know you do put pressure on yourself.
Undeniably, you do!
But, Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be perfect. Your kids don’t have to be perfect. I’ll repeat – perfection does not exist.
Give yourself and your family a break, and let the day be a celebration of you all! You and your children.
It’s not a competition, it’s not a judgment. It’s a celebration of the love you have for your kids and the love you have for yourself.
It’s the time to let go of perfection. It’s the time to give yourself permission to celebrate your imperfections and be proud of them.
Self inflicted pressure is seriously damaging – so let it go. And allow yourself to let your hair down this Mothers Day 2022.

Let go of Expectations
Says someone who always had loads of expectations around Mothers Day (*cringe*)
So, be brave and let your expectations go. It’s freeing when you do this.
You may not get flowers and thats OK, it really isn’t the end of the world.
You may get chocolate and perhaps wanted jewellery? You may get nothing!
When you release your expectations, nothing hurts you.
Also, watch out for the inner dialogue in your head where you make things ‘mean’ something.
Again, remove the expectations, and you remove the likelihood that you’ll make up a story about ‘why this happened’ and so on.
This Mothers day again, just to reinforce the point.
What with everything going on in the world, lets bring the attention onto our loved ones and creating connection rather than focusing on the materialistic side of things.
In Summary
- Breathe. And breathe some more.
- Do something you want to do, and tell your family so they can join in!
- Focus on connection, not perfection.
- Give back to your loved ones by releasing all pressure.
- Let go of expectations.
